Upcomig MLK Weekend Events

Jan. 13 -16 MLK events at the African American Museum of Philadelphia. This year's theme: Where Do We Go From Here Chaos or Community? $2 Admission for all guest and AAMP encourages a canned food to be donated to Philabundance and new school supplies for the MLK Day of Services Pre-K School Supplies Drive. The museum is located at 701 Arch Street in Philadelphia.

Jan. 14 - 16 Martin Luther King Weekend, Reading of "Letter from the Birmingham Jail" at Eastern Penitentiary located at 2027
Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia. 

Jan. 14 Snowy Bowie Skate at the Blue Cross Riverrink Winterfest at the Delaware River Waterfront in Philadelphia.
  
Jan. 15 The 28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration in Media, PA presented by the Media Fellowship House, Media Area Unit NAACP and the Media Area Houses of Worship 2:45 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at State and Lemon Streets. Keynote speaker: Patrick Houston, Swarthmore College senior. Patrick introduced President Barack Obama at 1 2016 rally in Philadelphia. 3 -4:30 p.m.
 
Jan. 15 MLK Sunday Supper at Cheshire House Mansion 1200 Main Street, Upland, PA 4 - 7 p.m. with Daisy Century as Sojourner Truth. Donation $10 per person.

Jan. 15 - Feb 26 Learn to Ice Skate 7 week course at Blue Cross River Rink $125 per person.

Jan. 16 MLK Day Hoops from the Heart basketball clinics at Cabrini, Haverford College, Neuman and Widener.

Jan. 16 Philadelphia Parks and Recreation volunteer on MLK Day of Service check the link for the many opportunities.

Jan. 16 Students from the Yeadon Public Library Cafe 3  after school program will:perform and provide small gifts and serve breakfast to local seniors in the community of Yeadon, Pennsylvania. 

Jan. 16 Philadelphia Orchestra Free MLK Day Concert at Girarad College 1:30 p.m. Tickets are required, general mission on a first come, first serve.   

Jan. 16 MLK Commemoration Committee of Chester and Vicinity Day Pieces of Peace at the Salvation Army 151 W. 15th St. in Chester. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Jan. 16 MLK Day Movie, Special Screening of Selma at the Media Upper Providence Library 6 - 8 p.m.

Jan. 16 MLK Day of Service Knit or Crochet Hats to donate to Chester east side at Congregation Beth Israel 542 S. New Middleton Rd. Media, PA 1 - 3 p.m.

Jan. 16 Martin Luther King Day collaboration Chester Children's Choir with St. David's Youth Choir perform at St. David's Episcopal Church 763 S. Valley Forge Road in Wayne at 7 p.m.

Jan. 16 Technology Day for Seniors at Helen Kate Furness Library 1 - 4 p.m.  

Jan. 16 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. This year 2017 it will be celebrated on January 16.

Jan. 16 was National Religious Freedom Day it  commemorates the Virginia General Assembly's adoption of Thomas Jefferson's landmark Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786. This vital document became the basis for the establishment clause, and led to freedom of religion for all Americans as protected in the religion clause in the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment. 

This monument is located in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
 It commemorates the drafting by Thomas Jefferson of the Statute of Religious Freedom that became the First Amendment to the Constitution.
