Upcoming Events This Weekend September 24

September 24 National Public Lands Day. The closest event to Delaware County is Valley Forge National Park. National Parks that charge an entrance fee are FREE today. 

September 24 Delaware County Master Gardners' Annual Fall Fest 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Smedley Park registration deadline September 21.

September 24 Community Arts Center Fine Arts and Craft Festival 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Park Avenue in Swarthmore.

September 24 Philly car-free fest 10 miles of closed streets to enjoy South Street from Front Street to the Schuylkill River Trail, then Martin Luther King Drive to the Falls Bridge.

September 24 The History and Mystery Event is back for the 7th year at the 1799 Lazaretto The day begins at 10 a.m. in the Community Room of the Tinicum Township Fire Station with Pete Williams, author of Philadelphia: The World War One Years. The author will discuss war time life and events in the Delaware Valley. Following Mr. Williams, at 11 AM, will be a ceremony recognizing the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Philadelphia School of Aviation, now called the Philadelphia Seaplane Base. A walking tour of the outside of the 1799 Lazaretto grounds will take place at 11:30 a.m. If you missed them in 2015, the public is invited to observe Monmouth University’s Department of History and Anthropology team of archaeologists as they dig at the Lazaretto from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will also be displaying artifacts from past digs at the Lazaretto’s. For more information contact Prof. Richard Veit, you have a picture of a ghost? Throughout the day you can bring the digital image to professional photographer Paul Michael Kane, and Geeks and Ghosts Guru Kenny Biddle for examination. The findings will be presented at 3 p.m. Hear the story of the 1799 Lazaretto’s “Unquiet Dead” from researcher and archivist Megan Harris as they traveled from the Lazaretto graveyard to their final destination at Arlington Cemetery and learn more about the L.I.S.I.P. The acclaimed Geeks and Ghosts Web TV show will be onsite throughout the day doing interviews, and they are bringing with them their famous Remote Viewing Challenge where you can take a chance at guessing what is inside a sealed box. The Public is invited to participate in the flag folding display of a 20 foot by 30 foot American flag, which is traveling around the world, at 5:30 p.m. At 7 PM in the community room join in on a round table discussion of everything history and mystery, with researchers who spent many hours inside the 1799 Lazaretto, professional photographer Paul Michael Kane who took hundreds of photos inside the Lazaretto, and Geeks and Ghosts Guru Kenny Biddle. The day wraps up at 8 p.m. with the popular Candlelight Mystery Walk where Lazaretto Lady Barbara Selletti will regale you with stories of the haunted history of the 1799 Lazaretto and Tinicum Island. In addition to the talks, there will be living historians onsite throughout the day. This is a rain or shine event, supported by our participant volunteers, Tinicum Township, the Historical Society of Tinicum Township, and organized by The Friends of the 1799 Lazaretto Interpretive Museum. The programing, event, and parking are free. September 24 Sierra Club Hike at The Willows, 490 Darby-Paoli Rd.,  Radnor Twp., Delaware County 1:15 p.m. 3 miles. The Willows is on the west side of Darby-Paoli Rd between Newtown and Brook Rds. Park in the Mansion lot. Note this hike is on Saturday not Sunday, the usual hiking day.
