10 Weighing Going Green

This is not a colon cleanse or a strict diet, it was just a scientific experiment on my part. I am not recommending or endorsing anything just sharing an experience

First of all, I can't boast of this novel idea, my experimentation is loosely based on the J J Virgin diet. I watched a webinar where she, J J Virgin spoke about eliminating certain things from your diet and I thought I might give it a try. There was more to her method including exercise and I did not do that, however I am a walker, do yoga 3 times a week and did Pilates one day a week, during this time period. Just to be clear I did not follow the diet exactly, if you choose to do that you can easily google it and get the full details. I was just curious what would happen. This in not an infomercial, just a curiosity.

Here is the list of seven things to remove from your diet: sugar, dairy, gluten, soy, peanuts, corn and eggs.  I was calling them the seven deadly sins.

I am not an extraordinary "Supergirl" I am typical of us all, if someone tells me I can't have something I want it all the more. Shameful, I know. So I had to use psychology on myself.  You can have it M A, you can have anything you want, but just not now. For 21 days, the things on the above list you can have.... nada.

Here is the breakdown:

Sugar is a no brainer, we should all try giving that up, except I have a bit of a sweet tooth and I can subconsciously tell when it is 100 feet near me and I crave its presence in my life. I can smell sugar. I know it is a sickness, but I did it, no sugar. When I read that Aspartame was in, what I thought was non-dairy creamer in my coffee, I almost cried. Aspartame, the sweetener is suppose to be worse than sugar. It makes you crave it even more, which might explain my psychosis with sugar. To see sugar by every other name click here....well, well here is one of those things I thought I blogged about years ago and I never published, obviously I was in a sugar fog.  You can read that list tomorrow. I already have it lined up, now that I am thinking clearly. There is also a "milk derivative" in my creamer, derivative of what I do not know but dairy (milk) was on the "no" list. No creamer in my coffee is painful to me BUT coconut, almond and cashew milk are allowed. I happened to like coconut milk so there was a small form of salvation. After just three days in, I admit I went a little sour without my sugar and to those around me that engaged. I went to bed a few nights, early.

Corn was going to be easy.  I only crave that on holidays, when Silver White Corn is in season in the summer and when that drenched in butter frozen corn goes on sale. Dang, Easter was included in the 21 day stretch and I had picked up a couple of boxes on sale for the meal. Corn can disguise itself in other forms too, like sugar, corn syrup and corn in your cereal and corn meal and the list goes on. I read every label now. I had no idea what I was unconsciously eating.

Okay, Soy would be easy, I will just lay off the Chinese food for 21 days. Shaking my head. Soy slips in as an additive to many things. I could not eat soup! Some might have sugar but all I read had a form of soy in it. Who knew?

Gluten, what is gluten anyway? I associate it with the glue that holds foods together but it has more repercussions than that for some people, especially those that are gluten intolerant. You pay more for items that are gluten free and that always baffles me. Items that contain no-salt, less- salt, no sugar, less sugar, and no gluten you pay more for.  It is missing an ingredient surely it should be less? Gluten is like wheat, barley, oats, rye, so you are not eating cereal for 21 days or pasta. I am not sure about rice but I stayed away from that too, it seems gluteny and binding.

Peanuts are not allowed. I was crushed because I sometimes have a waffle with a tablespoon of peanut butter for breakfast and almost a daily peanut butter cup or two in the evening while I am watching television, sometimes along with popcorn. Did I just say corn?  It may be a sin just to think about these items. It does lead to sinful thoughts. When I was alone, I thought, who would know if I sneak a peanut butter cup? My conscious would rely, I would know, so I stayed true. Peanut butter to me is packed with protein. How could that be a problem? I am staying with the program.  I did move the Resse's from sight in the freezer. It was a coping mechanism.

Dairy, do you know how many things are considered dairy? Just pass by your dairy case in the supermarket. No butter, cheese, milk, creamer or yogurt. Yogurt has become one of my staple foods and an evening snack when peanut butter cups are running low.  I admit, I was craving yogurt and I love cheese and butter and everything else supplied by cows, goats or milk derivatives. I was so upset to later find out that what I use as butter, margarine etc. is really an olive oil derivative and I could have had it on my sweet potato, instead I used just plain cinnamon.  It was a little dry. I also tried almond and cashew milk but for me coconut was a favorite and the closest I got to a coconut cream egg during the Easter season.

Eggs, normally I do not eat a lot of eggs unless maybe when I am going out to breakfast and they come with home fries but once in awhile I will have an egg in the morning. I already mentioned that this "cleasnse", as I call it was over the holiday correct? It was over two holidays St. Patrick's Day, which I only had to excuse myself from the potatoes, Irish potatoes and the Irish Soda bread and Easter, that was a tough one. I could not eat this and it smelled so good while I was making it.  I made five of them to use up the buttermilk and I froze one. I donated three breads to friends, became a martyr while the family ate theirs and froze one for me that I later shared some, not all, it was mine afterall.

I started to tell people what I was doing so now I was committed. I was also starting to lose weight, so now I was dreaming. Some of these foods can cause bloating and my stomach was backing off a little AND I was losing weight.  Mind you this was not my goal. I was just seeing what happened. I was dropping a pound a day. A pound a day and a 21 day excursion?  Are we talking bikini here? Actually never again after I left my twenties but the possibilities were there.  After 4 pounds, I leveled out so the dream ended quickly but I wasn't gaining either and I felt I had more energy and i was getting very creative in the kitchen.

What did I eat? Avocados became one of my very best friends.  I also went to a health food store and got a protein powder.  I think protein is important so I reluctantly purchased one on sale that would last approximately 20 days more less. I will not lie avocado, protein drink and coconut milk is bland. It tastes like pancake batter before it is cooked. You will have to juice it up!. Bananas, Cucumbers, apples, spinach and even vanilla extract can add that little extra to make a big difference. I added enough spinach to smoothie to rival Popeye.

So many people said, I could never do that.  It is not so bad going green and eating healthy food. I am glad to be back. The final result was I lost 7 lbs but I gained a whole new knowledge of my capabilities and what is in the food we unconsciously eat every day.  Try reading those labels, you will be shocked. Again, I am not recommending any diet but of course we should all have healthy appetites.
