In the Year 1916, What Have We Gained From History?

January 24 In Browning, Montana, the temperature drops from +6.7 °C to -48.8 °C (44 °F to -56 °F) in one day, the greatest change ever on record for a 24-hour period. Today this would be known as global cooling.

March 7 In Munich German automobile company BMW (Die Bayerischen Motoren Werke) is founded.

April – The toggle light switch is invented by William J. Newton and Morris Goldberg. Now that was genius. Anyone remember the push button light switches?

May 15 Lynching of Jesse Washington: A black farmhand, Jesse Washington, is brutally lynched in Robinson, Texas by a crowd of white people, for murdering his employers' wife. It is disputed whether Jesse really committed the crime, or was just being used as a scapegoat.

July 1–12  At least one shark attacks 5 swimmers along 80 miles (130 km) of New Jersey coastline during the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, resulting in 4 deaths and the survival of one youth who requires limb amputation. This event is the inspiration for author Peter Benchley, over half a century later, to write Jaws. That was 100 years ago, I swim in those LBI waters every summer a few blocks from where this happened, but not too deep.  I have never spotted a shark but the dolphins love this part of the coastline, conditions seemed to have improved.
August 25 – U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signs legislation creating the National Park Service.
I tip my hat to these people.  I never met a ranger I didn't like or that didn't love their job at the National Park Service.

September 13 – Mary, a circus elephant, is hanged in the town of Erwin, Tennessee for killing her handler, Walter "Red" Eldridge. The handler would probably be hanged now for making Mary angry.

October 16 – Margaret Sanger opens the first U.S. birth control clinic - a forerunner of Planned Parenthood. That is certainly prevalent and newsworthy in 2016. Must read more about Margaret and her plan.

The first 40-hour work week officially begins in the Endicott-Johnson factories of Western New York. Sixty hours was the norm in the United States prior to this. Looks like we got lucky here, However there are still some of us that put into close to 60 hours on Facebook, learn to unplug.

Oxycodone, a narcotic painkiller closely related to codeine is first synthesized in Germany. This is one of the biggest addition problems 100 years later.

You can read more about these events at the Wikipedia links where these dates were found under 1916.

1916 was not without its conflicts, lets see if we can improve on that in 2016.
April 11 – WWI: Egyptian Expeditionary Force begins occupation of the Sinai Peninsula.

June – Arab Revolt begins.
