Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes, Miss America

If you have been following my Atlantic City blogs, you will remember that I mentioned a better vantage point to get a better picture of the Fountain of Light. I have never had much luck at Atlantic City but last Saturday I hit the jackpot! I got up early to catch the sunrise and headed down the Atlantic City Boardwalk to get another chance at the photo op. Guess what I found? These ladies were shooting a commercial for the opening of the Miss America broadcast.

Miss New Mexico, Miss Florida, Miss Alabama, Miss New Jersey, Miss New York, Miss Missouri

52 Contestants will vie for the title of Miss America 2016. Normally it is not something I would tune into. I will now have to watch Ray Donovan OnDemand but I  have a vested interest in the winner. While I only got to see a small sampling of the talent, brains and beauty that we have in the United States I am rooting for all six of these young ladies to make it into the finals. They are all gorgeous. If Miss New York if she wins, would be the fourth contestant in a row from New York to win the Miss America title.

Here were my observations and opinions.

Best fountain dancer
Miss New Mexico Marissa Livingston from Albuquerque, New Mexico graduate of the University of New Mexico where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and communications, Platform Supporting For the Kids through Children's Miracle Network through Dance Marathon. competition talent was a jazz dance. She currently works for a public relations firm.

Best potential to be a future model (IMO)
Miss Florida Mary Katherine Fetchel from Leesburg, Florida, is also Miss University of Florida, Her career goal is  Family Youth and Community Sciences and hopes to work in human rights law and work on human trafficking.  Her platform "A Safety Net: Protecting Our Youth From Online Predators. Her sister was runner up last year. She is 19 years old.

Healthy, happy and having fun
Miss Alabama , Meg McGuffin is from Ozark, Alabama. She is a graduate of Auburn University earned a bachelor's degree  and was pursuing a master's degree in administration of higher education at Auburn when she was crowned Miss Alabama. McGuffin was crowned Miss Auburn University 2014. Her platform: Healthy is the new skinny promoting positive body image. She is 22

Best personality New Jersey(IMO)
Miss New Jersey, Lindsay Gianni, is a Broadcast Journalist  student at Rowan University with a 3.9 GPA. On the Miss New Jersey website they call her a "Fireball". I could see this in the few minutes I watched the group at work. She is a salsa dance teacher and I would call her saucy and full of personality. I think she smiled the entire time, she really seem to enjoy what she was doing.  In 2012, she designed the sign, "Stay Alive..Don't Text and Drive. Her platform is "Dangers of Distracted driving".Good luck Lindsay! Her hometown is Hammonton, New Jersey. She is 21.

Tough shoes to fill (could be the fourth New Yorker in a row to win)
Miss New York Jamie Lynn Macchia is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Wagner College with a Bachelor of Science in Arts Administration and Marketing.  Her platform: "HOPE inspiring action against pediatric cancer, She  is co-chair of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk. She has also won the MAO Community Service Award, MAO Academic Award,  and Children’s Miracle Network’s “Miracle Maker” Award (two years in a row). She is 24, The funny thing is, she looks the youngest to me but very capable to wear the crown.

Not afraid to get her feet wet.
Miss Missouri,McKenzie Lane Garber,  graduated from Oral Roberts University with honors in just three years. her major was convergence journalism. Convergence journalism is two mediums used together, I had to look that one up and should be versed on tablet apps and social media. She is the first person to be crowned both Miss Missouri's Outstanding Teen and Miss Missouri. Her Miss Missouri competition talent was a jazz en pointe performance to Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T.". Her platform is "CharacterPlus: Inspiring Lives of Integrity Through Education". She is 21 years old.

All of the ladies above and perhaps all in the competition have just won the title in their respective states in June 2015!

A Miss America contestant is chosen by talent performances and interviews in addition to physical appearance, judging by my experience and watching this small sample of ambitious young ladies they are not just another pretty face. You can view the National Judging Process on the Miss America website.

I think they deserve some points for getting up early in the morning, I spotted them sometime after 6:30  a.m, and they all looked perfectly primped, makeup and hair all flawless and energetically co-operative with the camera crew. I don't think I even had time to brush my hair. I had just rolled right out of bed.

The Miss America "Show Your Shoes" Parade will be held on Saturday on the Atlantic City Boardwalk and the new Miss America 2016 will be revealed on Sunday evening September 13,  9 p.m. - 11 p.m.
