September 21 MIDDLETOWN MONDAYS 2015 COLONIAL TAVERNS: THE INSIDE STORY by Rich Wagner, brewery historian and author of Philadelphia Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the Cradle of Liberty. Tavern names, tavern signs and the lore surrounding the nations earliest public spaces is rooted in centuries-old customs from the countries that colonists came from. In addition to British subjects, southeastern Pennsylvania was home to Dutch and Swedes and Philadelphias role as a seaport added even more international flavors. Whether lodging travelers, feeding the populace or providing a comfortable setting to talk and drink, taverns were an integral part of communities and served as court rooms, post offices, stage coach stops and in some cases, places of worship. Join us as Rich Wagner brings to life some of the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Colonial era taverns. Lecture begin at 7:00 p.m.
